Dialectical behavior therapy

Skills for the hardest moments.

DBT teaches practical skills for intense emotions, without asking you to pretend they aren't there.

What DBT is

Dialectical behavior therapy is a skills-based form of talk therapy. It rests on a simple balance: accept where you are right now, and work to change what isn’t serving you.

The four skill areas

Mindfulness

Noticing what’s happening right now without being carried away by it.

Distress tolerance

Getting through a crisis or craving without making it worse.

Emotion regulation

Understanding your emotions and changing how strongly they steer you.

Interpersonal effectiveness

Asking for what you need and setting limits while protecting relationships.

Why it helps in recovery

Many people use substances to escape feelings that seem too big to handle. DBT gives you other tools to use in those moments, so that using isn’t your only option.

Is DBT right for you?

Ask us. We’ll talk through how it might fit into your care.
