MAT

Medication-assisted treatment, explained.

Medication, combined with counseling and support, is a well-established treatment for opioid and alcohol use disorders.

What MAT is

Medication-assisted treatment combines FDA-approved medication with counseling and other support. Medication can ease withdrawal and cravings, which gives you room to do the work of recovery.

Which medications are used

For opioid use disorder

Buprenorphine, methadone and naltrexone. Methadone for opioid use disorder is dispensed through certified opioid treatment programs.

For alcohol use disorder

Acamprosate, disulfiram and naltrexone.

Is it just trading one drug for another?

No. Taken as prescribed, these medications are a medical treatment for a medical condition, much like medication for other chronic illnesses. The right choice and length of treatment depend on your health and your history, and that’s a decision for you and a qualified prescriber.

Please don’t stop or change a medication on your own. Talk with your prescriber first. If you use opioids, keeping naloxone nearby can save your life.
